Asthma/Bronchitis/Sinusitis

What is Asthma?

Asthma was originally a term that was used to mean a difficult time breathing. Now it is defined as a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs. 1 It usually results from an allergic reaction from allergens, such as pet dander, cockroaches or pollen. But it may also be triggered by hypersensitivity to cold and dry air usually associated with exercise, or triggered by workplace irritants such as chemical fumes, gases or dust which is referred to as occupational asthma.

The results are narrowing and swelling of the airways with the production of extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and can trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is defined as the inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes which is characterized by a cough, hypersecretion of mucus and expectoration of sputum over a long period of time usually associated with certain triggers. Usually an infection is also present. 1

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the lining membranes of any sinus especially the ones surrounding the nasal passage. 1

Steam along with prescribed medication is helpful and beneficial in a person who has asthma, bronchitis or sinusitis. Steam aids in loosening the mucus and opening up airways which improves your breathing and alleviating congestion. The wet heat from the steam room thins and opens the mucous membranes in the body.

Always seek medical advice first before using a steam room.
