Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is an infection that effects the nail of the toe. You can also have fungus on the nails of your fingers as well. Usually, the area can become infected when it has been exposed to moisture overtime, seeping through the cracks in the nail or cuts in the skin. A visual indicator of toenail fungus include discoloration thick, brittle and sometimes, painful toenails. Fungus grows well in warm and damp places making your shoes and feet the perfect breeding ground for fungus.

Studies show that men are more likely than women to experience a toenail infection. There are many factors that play into this. You can increase your chances of getting an infection if you spend a lot of time in water or if you’ve recently suffered an injury to the toenail. Health factors, such as diabetes, persons with athletes foot, and weak immune systems can all increase the chances of someone developing toenail fungus.

Symptoms

Thicker than normal and warped or oddly shaped toenail

Yellow in color

Brittle, crumbly or ragged

Dark in color with buildup under nail

Loose or separated nail bed

Slight foul smell

Treatment

A physician is required to diagnosis nail fungus. They will be able to determine the severity and suggest a treatment plan that will kill the fungus and prep the nail to grow back healthy! A natural remedy for fungus is tea trea oil. Tea tree oil contains anti-fungal and antiseptic properties that can be effective in treating nail fungus. Always consult your doctor before applying anything to the effected area.

While we can not treat toe fungus nor service anyone with fungus at Next Man Up, we can provide a referral to a physician who can help treat the infection.

Be good to your feet, and they will let you walk all over them!
